Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He went on to say, "I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today's events."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect."
Marquez led the timesheets in all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second margin, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
During the press conference after the race, Marquez described the weekend as "perfect." He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, which he and his team chose to sit out.
Marquez discussed the intense emotions he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the immense relief he felt when he finally crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he shared. "It was an exceptionally long race, and managing our emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
“They provided significant assistance, particularly the Gresini team, which offered me a chance. I came in as a novice, aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue striving forward.”
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various matters in the closing laps.
"During the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he commented. "But more than just the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place, constantly filled with a party atmosphere."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, when you find yourself in a tough spot, having a compassionate and dedicated team who are even more affected than you are can truly make a significant impact."
"The celebration felt quite unusual as the excitement was higher in previous races where we celebrated second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marc Marquez, who led in every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, confessed that he experienced some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he stated. "You could tell from yesterday's Sprint that I wasn't having a good time because I understood how crucial today was and recognized the significant opportunity it presented."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, you appear consistent and intelligent; but in reality, you're the same person. Without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the top contenders."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first success following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
“I consider it to be on the same level as 2021 in Germany,” remarked Marquez.
"When facing numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes."
"Although I've achieved 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my initial win in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence that sets them apart."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along effortlessly, in a state of flow, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he believed winning was within reach ever since he first tested the Desmosedici in Valencia at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed his confidence that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that it was then he became aware they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
