Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a "perfect" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I knew that today was crucial."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which remained damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and during which he did not record a lap time.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they had led all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that accumulated during the nearly three years he hadn't won a race, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely lengthy, and it was hard to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory feel unbelievable. Instantly, I began to reflect on the entire journey, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They offered significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, provided me with the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, my thoughts were already on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place, constantly filled with a party atmosphere."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In challenging and tough circumstances, having a compassionate and empathetic team, who were more affected by my struggles than I was, truly made a significant impact."
"It was an unusual kind of celebration because, in other races, the adrenaline was more intense—even when celebrating second or third places—compared to today. Today was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he faced some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of stress today," he stated. "You could see in the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having fun. I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the pace, it appears that you can handle the situation, remain steady, and make intelligent decisions; but fundamentally, you're the same person. Without the speed, though, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading contenders."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first success since he fractured his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When faced with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win changes."
"I did win 60 times, but those two victories, along with my first MotoGP win, are the most significant. They boost my confidence differently and give me that extra edge."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite being his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez revealed that he believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory was imminent. He mentioned that it was then he understood they would have their chances. However, he noted that contending for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, it was in Valencia that I began to realize it would eventually come."
