Marc Marquez Ends Nearly Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he wasn't having fun because he was aware of the day's significance.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, a triumph he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn’t lead was the Warm Up, affected by the rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez shared during the post-race press conference. “We were in the lead for all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to stay in the garage after discussing it with the team.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible feeling right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep my emotions in check during the final laps. However, when I crossed the finish line, it felt as though I had shed 3–4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing burden on my back, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, everyone involved, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my best effort, and we succeeded. We’ve set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to ponder over matters in the closing laps.
"The final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium itself, I was thinking about the Gresini garage. It's always a fun and cheerful place, like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the people surrounding me played a crucial role. In extremely challenging circumstances, having a compassionate and caring team, who were even more affected by the situation than I was, made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, in past races, the adrenaline was higher even when we were celebrating second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he mentioned. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance to make an impact."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation, stay consistent, and make smart decisions; but you're still the same person. Without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When faced with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of victories changes."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two victories, along with my first MotoGP win, are the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that additional assurance."
“I hadn’t felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the flow, but I was very focused on avoiding any errors.”
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he stated that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he initially rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory is on the horizon. He stated, "At that point, I understood that our chances will come. Competing for the championship is another matter; we need to continue our efforts to reach that stage."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
