Marc Marquez Ends Nearly Three-Year Victory Drought with a ‘Perfect’ Weekend at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted he placed a lot of stress on himself to achieve an ideal performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint race, he wasn’t having fun because he was aware of the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a success he called "perfect" after a flawless performance.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the pit.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top class.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he remarked. "It was an extremely long race, and it was tough to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, my back felt increasingly burdened, making this victory even more remarkable. Right away, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we've been through, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They were very supportive, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a chance. I came in as a beginner, tried my best, and we achieved our goal. Now, we're aiming for new objectives and continuing to push forward."
Throughout the race, Marquez established a significant lead, allowing him to contemplate matters during the final laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, it's like a constant celebration there."
In addition to that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. When you find yourself in an extremely challenging situation, if you lack a compassionate and supportive team—people who are more affected by your struggle than you are—that truly makes a difference.
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, in previous races, the excitement was higher even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about feeling emotion rather than adrenaline."
Marquez confessed that, after leading all the sessions except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning, he felt some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
“I felt the weight of expectations today,” he remarked. “If you noticed during yesterday’s Sprint, I wasn’t having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today would be and recognized the significant chance I had.”
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you possess the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the circumstances, maintain consistency, and act wisely; however, you remain the same person. Without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the top contenders."
Having claimed victory, Marquez regards it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you face numerous injuries and are in a tough phase, the significance of your victories changes."
Indeed, I have won 60 races, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that additional self-assurance.
"I hadn’t felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I was especially focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez recognized that a race victory was on the horizon. He understood that they would have their chances. However, competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that eventually it would come."
