Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Winless Streak with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Victory
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP event. He confessed, "I wasn't enjoying the Sprint because I was aware of how crucial today is."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, calling the weekend "perfect" after claiming victory.
Marquez led the way in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an impressive 0.8-second lead, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, affected by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, was the only one where Marquez didn't lead, as he didn't record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez stated during the press conference following the race. “We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up, where I chose, along with the team, to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the immense relief he experienced when he finally crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had lost 3-4kg."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each passing step, winning this was unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we had undertaken, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various matters during the closing laps.
"The final three laps, my thoughts were already on getting to the podium," he mentioned. "But beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful; it's constantly a celebration there."
"Besides that, the main thing was the support from those around me. When you find yourself in a tough spot, in a really challenging circumstance, having a compassionate team, genuinely kind individuals who are even more affected by the struggle than I am — that was the key difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since there was more adrenaline in other races where we finished second or third. Today's event was more about feeling emotional rather than experiencing an adrenaline rush."
Leading all sessions except the rain-soaked Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to cap off his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "During yesterday's Sprint, it was clear I wasn't having a good time because I understood the significance of today and recognized the important chance I had."
"That’s why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle things well, remain steady, and make wise decisions; but fundamentally, you’re the same person. Without the speed, however, managing the situation becomes very challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading racers."
Having secured the win, Marquez views this victory on par with his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first win since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez remarked.
"When faced with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of the wins changes."
"I indeed secured 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my first MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant because they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding smoothly, feeling relaxed, but I remained highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite Marquez being in his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to understand that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that they will have their chances to succeed. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
“However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it would come.”
