Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted he felt self-imposed pressure to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I wasn't having fun during the Sprint because I understood the significance of today's race," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by securing a triumphant victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, was the only one not led by Marquez, as he didn’t record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the press conference following the race. He mentioned that they dominated all sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We felt incredible from the start of the race," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions during the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had lost 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, achieving this victory felt unbelievable. My thoughts instantly turned to the entire journey we went through, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me this chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We have set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various things in the closing laps.
“During the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he commented. “Even more than the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always cheerful and lively; it's like a constant celebration there.”
"Additionally, the first important factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, being in a tough spot, it's crucial to have a compassionate team. The presence of genuinely kind individuals, who were more affected by the situation than I was, truly made a difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual; in other races, the adrenaline was much higher when I secured second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling emotional than experiencing an adrenaline rush."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to cap off his weekend with a Grand Prix victory, having led every session except for the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of how crucial today would be and I recognized that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Because of that, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the pace, it appears you can handle things well, remain steady, and act wisely; but fundamentally, you are the same. Without the speed, however, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
With this latest win, Marquez ranks it alongside his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be just as significant as the event in Germany in 2021," Marquez stated.
"When a team faces numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of their wins changes."
I indeed won 60 times, but those two wins, along with my inaugural victory in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence uniquely and provide that additional assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding with ease, staying focused and in the flow, but I made sure to be extra careful to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed a win was attainable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory is imminent. He noted that this test showed that they will have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires ongoing effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen."
