Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Reflects on Emotional Journey
Marc Marquez admitted to putting himself under pressure to deliver an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He confessed that during the Sprint, he wasn't having fun because he was aware of the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect" after an ideal weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position by a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin in the Sunday Grand Prix.
The only session where Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain that fell from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and he did not record a lap time during that session.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned, "We dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to remain in the pit with the team's agreement."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year gap without a win and the sense of relief he felt as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-class victory.
"In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep our emotions in check during the final laps. However, crossing the finish line made me feel as though I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory feel unbelievable. I instantly began reflecting on the entire journey, all the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
“They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we achieved our goal. We have set new objectives and will continue to strive forward.”
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to relax and contemplate during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyous place, constantly filled with celebration."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In challenging and tough times, having a compassionate and caring team—people who were more worried about me than themselves—was what truly made a difference."
“It was an unusual celebration because in other races, the adrenaline was higher when celebrating second or third place finishes. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline.”
After leading every session except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling a bit of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he stated. "If you noticed during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how significant today would be and recognized the major opportunity it presented."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, staying consistent and appearing smart; however, you're still the same person. It's just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the top contenders."
Marquez views this victory as being on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on par with Germany in 2021," Marquez remarked.
“When you face numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of the wins changes.”
"Although I have 60 wins, those two triumphs, along with my first MotoGP win, stand out as the most significant because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide you with that extra assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, I understood that a victory in a race is within reach," Marquez stated. "At that moment, I knew we would have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; we must continue our efforts to reach that goal."
“However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come.”
