Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted he "put a lot of pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he didn't have fun because he was aware of the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect."
Marquez led the way in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a lead of 0.8 seconds, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night extending into Sunday morning, was the only one not led by Marquez since he did not record a lap time.
During the press conference after the race, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, which he and his team chose to sit out.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he felt upon crossing the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
“We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race,” he stated. “The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep our emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3–4kg.”
“Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we went through, the people who supported me, and my loved ones—my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez.”
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a beginner, aimed to put in my best effort, and we achieved our goal. Now, we set new objectives and continue to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts in the closing laps.
“In the last three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he mentioned. “Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it’s always a celebration over there.”
"Additionally, the most significant aspect was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, being surrounded by genuinely compassionate individuals who experience even more distress than I do made all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because there was more adrenaline in other races when we came in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he explained. "In the Sprint yesterday, you could tell I wasn't having a good time because I understood that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. If you have the speed, it seems like you can handle everything—you appear consistent and smart. But without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, saying it was on a similar level.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes."
"It's accurate that I secured 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, hold the most significance because they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide you with an added sense of assurance."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just coasting along effortlessly, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted that a race victory was imminent. He expressed confidence that their chances would come. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come."
