Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Triumph
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to achieve an impeccable performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He confessed, "I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, describing the event as "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an impressive 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not record a lap time in the Warm Up, which was the only session he did not lead. This session was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the press conference after the race. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up. To be honest, the team and I chose to stay in the garage for that."
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt upon crossing the finish line to secure his 60th top-class victory.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to manage my emotions in the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3–4kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning this victory felt unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a beginner, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue pushing forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him the luxury of contemplation in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he stated. "Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place; it's constantly a celebration there."
"Additionally, the most important aspect was the people surrounding me. During extremely challenging and profound situations, having a genuinely compassionate and kind team, who are even more affected than I am, made all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because the excitement levels were higher in other races where we finished second or third. Today, it was more about feeling emotion rather than adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to win the Grand Prix after leading all the sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he stated. "You could see from the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, it appears that you can handle things well, maintain consistency, and act intelligently. However, you're essentially the same person; it's just extremely challenging to manage the situation without that speed."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When facing numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of the victories changes."
"Although I have won 60 races, those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence that sets them apart."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since his initial ride on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that they will have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship is a different challenge altogether and requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come to pass."
