Major Overhaul in School Inspections: UK Scraps One-Word Ofsted Ratings Following Tragic Catalyst

State schools will no longer receive one-word Ofsted evaluations, effective immediately, a change celebrated as a pivotal event for students.
Before, the educational oversight body assigned one of four ratings to the schools it evaluated: excellent, satisfactory, needs enhancement, or unsatisfactory.
Starting this academic year, the Department for Education (DfE) has introduced a new system where four grades will be assigned within the existing sub-categories: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
Beginning in September 2025, schools will start issuing report cards that offer parents a detailed evaluation of school performance and aim to make inspections more impactful in promoting enhancements, the announcement detailed.
The adjustment comes after consultations with the educational community and relatives of headteacher Ruth Perry. Perry tragically ended her life following an Ofsted evaluation that demoted her Caversham Primary School in Reading from "outstanding" to "inadequate" due to issues related to safeguarding.
In 2022, a coroner determined that the inspection procedures played a role in her death.
The Department for Education stated that simplistic single phrase grades do not offer a just and precise evaluation of a school's overall performance, and that this reform will assist in removing obstacles to opportunity.
