Los Angeles Illuminates the Future of Urban EV Charging with 10,000 Streetlight Chargers

Los Angeles is enhancing a city initiative that integrates electric vehicle chargers into streetlamp posts.

Charged EVs was the first to report that the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting has teamed up with AmpUp and EVSE. The collaboration involves integrating Level 2 charging stations into 150 streetlight poles across Los Angeles, with AmpUp supplying the software and EVSE providing the retractable charging cables.

AmpUP and EVSE state that by mounting the 25-foot cables on current poles at a height of 10 feet, installation expenses can be slashed by 70%. This method also minimizes the risk of the cables being vandalized, damaged, or causing people to trip and get injured.

The Street Lighting Department of Los Angeles, tasked with managing 220,000 light poles across the city, is working towards achieving the goal set by the mayor to equip 10,000 of these poles with electric vehicle charging stations. This effort is running concurrently with the plan to upgrade current streetlight bulbs to LED versions that are not only brighter but also conserve more energy. The city initiated this overhaul of its street lighting system in 2020, with the integration of EV charging capabilities as a foundational element.

Installing electric vehicle chargers on streetlights is particularly beneficial in city settings as it capitalizes on already established structures and does not encroach on limited pedestrian areas, providing a charging solution for residents of multi-unit buildings who might not have access to at-home charging options.

Beyond Los Angeles, Seattle disclosed its intentions in 2022 to set up on-street charging stations for electric vehicles upon demand. Meanwhile, in 2021, Kansas City and New York City initiated pilot programs for these chargers, with New York observing significant usage. Earlier in the year, Voltpost unveiled its modern-looking EV chargers integrated with streetlights, announcing plans to deploy them in key American cities including New York, Chicago, and Detroit.
