Lewis Hamilton Celebrates Mercedes’ Stellar Performance at Monaco Grand Prix: A Glimpse of Hope for F1 2024 Season
Lewis Hamilton celebrates Mercedes' most outstanding performance of the F1 2024 season in Monaco
Lewis Hamilton was excited about Mercedes' promising beginning to the weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton described Friday at the Monaco Grand Prix as Mercedes' "most outstanding day" of the 2024 F1 season.
The seven-time world champion led the first practice session in Monte Carlo and finished the day with the second quickest lap, narrowly trailing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by just 0.188 seconds.
Hamilton was thrilled with Mercedes' strong beginning to the weekend.
"Without a doubt, today was positive. It's the most successful day we've experienced on the track," Hamilton stated.
"I had a favorable experience with the car, it was a pleasure to drive. The racetrack is outstanding. The traction is impressive. However, we're facing some issues with the car's equilibrium, but overall, it performed well."
Hamilton concluded a promising performance by Mercedes at the iconic street circuit, coming into Monaco following a mostly underwhelming beginning to the season.
The British driver, aged 39, expressed that piloting the Mercedes W15 on the Monte Carlo track was significantly more pleasurable compared to its last two predecessors.
Hamilton expressed astonishment at the traction and the vehicle's response, stating, "The ride was certainly more pleasurable compared to our experiences here in the past, especially over the last couple of years."
"In the second session, it's uncertain whether there was any improvement. For the longer stretches, there's necessary work to be done before tomorrow to ensure we can sustain performance through to the race's conclusion. Enhancing our pace for extended runs and addressing graining is a must."
In the second practice session, George Russell, Hamilton's team member, faced challenges due to vibrations in his vehicle, finishing in the 10th position.
Mercedes will approach with caution considering their history of promising Fridays this year, which have often led to a significant decline in their competitive edge as the weekend unfolded.
"Overall, it's been a fairly successful day for both of our cars," remarked Andrew Shovlin, the trackside engineering director at Mercedes.
The first practice session was efficient. We decided to move ahead with the FP2 soft tyre plans during that session, anticipating rain, which ultimately did not happen. As a result, we ended up using worn tyres for the afternoon's low fuel soft tyre run.
"George experienced issues with shaking when applying the brakes – it's crucial that we address this by tomorrow since it seemed to intensify throughout the day, becoming particularly bothersome by the afternoon."
"Nonetheless, the car's basic speed appears promising. We need to improve our performance over longer distances since we must be more gentle with the front tires this Sunday, but we have several strategies to address that.
"We also need to monitor the track as the traction improves, but it's promising that we appear to have a solid foundation to start with."
