Leclerc’s Stunning Comeback: Tops FP2 in Baku After Early Crash
Charles Leclerc Recovers From Accident to Lead FP2 in Close Contest
Following an accident in FP1, Charles Leclerc secures the lead position for Ferrari in FP2, according to Lewis Larkam in Baku.
Charles Leclerc bounced back from a crash in the first practice session to finish as the quickest driver in Friday's practice sessions at the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The driver from Ferrari clocked a time on soft tires that was merely 0.006 seconds faster than that of Red Bull's Sergio Perez, showcasing promising speed in his quest to bounce back from his latest dip in performance.
After a tumultuous first practice where he found himself crashing into the barriers at Turn 15, Leclerc managed to navigate through the second session with some close calls but ultimately avoided any collisions with the walls.
Lewis Hamilton secured the third fastest time for Mercedes, trailing his soon-to-be Ferrari teammate by a mere 0.066 seconds.
In the other Ferrari, Carlos Sainz secured the fourth-quickest time, trailing by 0.466 seconds, while Oscar Piastri from McLaren rounded out the top five.
Max Verstappen, the front-runner in the championship standings and the fastest in the first practice session, finished in sixth place, trailing by half a second. The driver from the Netherlands had a close call when he overbraked and veered off course at Turn 5, just managing to avoid a collision with the barrier.
Lance Stroll from Aston Martin secured the seventh position, whereas George Russell was positioned ninth, flanked by Haas drivers Nico Hulkenberg in eighth and Oliver Bearman, who clocked a time that landed him in the top-10.
Championship contender Lando Norris ended up in 17th place due to his lap on soft tyres being disrupted by encountering a slower Pierre Gasly in the fast bends leading to the main straight.
Unlike the tumultuous start to Friday's practice session, which saw three stoppages due to red flags, the second practice went smoothly without any interruptions, even though numerous drivers came dangerously close to hitting the barriers.
