Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Win Not Enough for Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘securing victories through the remainder of the season’
"Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? I'm not convinced yet, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must continue to enhance their performance in order to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively utilizing a one-stop strategy, surpassing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, emphasizing that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to exercise caution," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, we experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza has its own distinct and unique characteristics."
"A lot of straight sections and few turns characterized the track. We equipped a rear wing specifically designed for this course, which played a crucial role in our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that certainly made us more competitive with McLaren. However, I believe it's not sufficient for us to dominate on different tracks for the remainder of the season."
“We still have plenty of tasks ahead, but I'm very pleased to have accomplished this in Italy.”
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referring to similar discussions about a championship contention after his victory in Monaco.
“This weekend, we showed a lot of strength, but the situation might be quite different in Baku and again in Singapore. Therefore, we need to start fresh. We made that adjustment from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the shift between those two weekends was quite significant.”
"We experienced three or four really challenging races as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Moving forward, I hope we won't face such difficult races again, and I believe we won't."
"However, it's crucial to remember that both the team and external expectations should remain grounded and not skyrocket from one race to the next, as this wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
