Lawrence Stroll’s Long Pursuit: Adrian Newey Poised to Join Aston Martin After Years of Negotiations
Lawrence Stroll discloses that he and Adrian Newey have been in discussions for several years.
Lawrence Stroll admits he has spent years attempting to persuade Adrian Newey to become part of his Formula 1 team.
The owner of the Aston Martin team, Lawrence Stroll, mentioned that he has been having discussions with F1 design icon Adrian Newey for several years regarding the possibility of him joining the team.
In May, it was revealed that Newey, considered one of the top car designers in the history of Formula 1, would depart from Red Bull in early 2025 after nearly two decades with the team. This news initiated a scramble among other teams to enlist his expertise.
Aston Martin is reportedly close to securing a contract with Newey, despite previous interest from Ferrari, McLaren, and Williams. An official announcement is expected to be made next week, just in time for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
If this action is taken, it would represent a significant achievement for Stroll's team. Newey has a record of securing 12 drivers' championships and 13 constructors' titles while working with Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull.
In an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, Stroll mentioned that he and Adrian have been in discussions not just for months, but for several years.
"Adrian stands out as the most skilled and accomplished person in Formula 1, according to his past performances and achievements."
"I believe every Formula 1 team would be thrilled to have Adrian join, and I share that enthusiasm."
When questioned about the possibility of Newey joining Aston Martin, Stroll responded, "I definitely hope that happens."
Earlier this summer, Newey took a discreet tour of Aston Martin's cutting-edge factory located in Silverstone.
A representative from Aston Martin informed Crash.net that Adrian has been associated with various teams and would enhance any project he chooses to be part of.
"While he is among several prominent figures associated with Aston Martin's highly anticipated project, there's currently no official news to share."
In an interview with BBC Sport, Eddie Jordan, the former Formula 1 team principal and current manager of Newey, stated that he is "not ready" to discuss what lies ahead for the 65-year-old.
Aston Martin has just revealed that they have hired Andy Cowell, the former head of Mercedes' engine division, and Enrico Cardille, who previously served as the chassis technical director at Ferrari. They will be teaming up with Dan Fallows, the technical director who came over from Red Bull in 2022.
In 2026, Aston Martin is set to begin a new engine collaboration with Honda. Since 2019, the Japanese company has been providing engines for Red Bull's vehicles.
