Lando Norris Triumphs in Miami Despite Safety Car Restart Slip, Brundle Reveals

Martin Brundle points out the solitary error Lando Norris committed in his remarkable journey to his inaugural F1 victory in Miami.

During his first Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix, Lando Norris made a single error at the restart following the Safety Car, as pointed out by Martin Brundle.

The driver from McLaren took advantage of a perfectly timed Safety Car deployment to surge ahead, and then managed to extend his lead over Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the last 25 laps, clinching his inaugural grand prix victory in Miami.

Norris maintained complete dominance during the final stretch, although he faced a bit of challenge from Verstappen following the restart after the Safety Car incident.

In his most recent column for Sky, following the latest race, ex-F1 driver now turned analyst and commentator, Brundle, pointed out the alternative actions Norris could have taken.

"In his column, Brundle noted that Lando's solitary error occurred during the restart, after the Safety Car had finally caught up with the lead driver."

He had to decide between accelerating at the peak of the crucial 17th bend or slowing down towards the end line before rapidly speeding up, considering the brief distance to the initial deceleration point.

Rather than choosing an extreme approach, he opted for a moderate strategy. With Verstappen pushing him from behind, it was a tight race to see which of the two would emerge in the lead after the first turn.

"Norris delayed his">king but managed to keep the car on the track, eventually easing into a highly assured performance that saw him clinch victory by 7.6 seconds as he completed the 57th lap. His team believes they possessed the speed to secure the win even without the safety car's intervention, though that remains speculative."

Norris conceded that his performance during the restart could have been better, characterizing it as somewhat "rusty."

Norris shared, "It's been quite a while since I've had to lead restarts behind the Safety Car, so I was a bit out of practice. It's something I'll focus on improving for the future."

"However, if I managed to protect my position successfully going into the first turn and maintained my lead through that turn, I felt pretty sure about my chances from that point onward."

Brundle mentioned that it's uncommon to see a victory in Formula 1 that is as widely celebrated as the one Lando Norris achieved in Miami.

"Ayrton Senna's victory at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix stands on par with Nigel Mansell's triumph at Silverstone in 1992. Additionally, Ferrari's wins at Monza are also notable, representing victories on their home turf," he further mentioned.

Lando's fiercest competitors were genuinely pleased for him, and it was certainly about time that both he (especially) and his team secured a victory in a Grand Prix main event instead of just a Sprint. Unfortunately, he was abruptly eliminated from the Sprint on Saturday, preventing any opportunity to assess his performance during that short 19-lap race.

"He's an internationally renowned racer, yet it's likely that numerous fans were delighted to witness Red Bull and the unpredictable Max Verstappen being outpaced purely on speed towards the end."
