The Labour Party has initiated the procedure to choose a candidate for the general election who will succeed Jeremy Corbyn in representing the Islington North constituency in London.
The previous leader of the Labour Party has been without the party whip since 2020 due to his reaction to a report on antisemitism, which has led him to serve as an independent MP.
In the previous year, his attempt to run for Labour was thwarted when the party's governing National Executive Committee (NEC) supported a resolution that barred him from seeking re-election in the constituency he has served for over four decades.
The seasoned Member of Parliament has consistently secured the Islington North seat since his initial election in 1983, achieving victory in the past 10 elections, frequently with a substantial lead.
Mr. Corbyn, still affiliated with the Labour Party, has yet to disclose if he intends to stand as an independent candidate. Such a move might lead to his suspension from the party, where he has been a member for five decades.
The process for candidates to apply for Labour's nomination in the constituency began on Wednesday, and the shortlisting of candidates is anticipated to occur next week.
The candidate debates are set to occur virtually, with the Labour Party rejecting claims that this format is out of the ordinary. Reports indicate that the outcome will be revealed on June 1.

Kate Dove, the chair of Momentum, stated: "For over four decades, Jeremy Corbyn has faithfully served the constituents of Islington North, and he has been a member of the Labour Party for more than half a century.
Every member of his local party branch unanimously voted to show their support for Jeremy and to affirm their authority to select their own candidate for parliament.
"Democratic principles require that the decision to keep Jeremy as their Labour representative in Islington North should rest with the local Labour members, not with Keir Starmer's group in Westminster."
Mr. Corbyn has yet to make a statement regarding the initiation of the selection process
He has previously described the prohibition against his candidacy as a "disgraceful assault on party democracy" and suggested he might run as an independent candidate, stating, "I have devoted my life to advocating for a more equitable society for the residents of Islington North, and I have no plans to cease my efforts now."
In October 2020, Mr. Corbyn was removed from the parliamentary group due to his response to a report from the EHRC that condemned the way his leadership managed complaints of antisemitism within the party.

Right after the report was released, Mr. Corbyn asserted that the extent of the issue concerning antisemitism claims within the Labour Party had been "exaggerated for political purposes by our rivals."
Sir Keir Starmer, a former member of Mr. Corbyn's shadow cabinet, has firmly stated that his predecessor will not be reinstated into the party. He believes that permitting him to run in the upcoming election would severely reduce Labour's likelihood of securing a victory.
