Kazakhstan Poised to Host MotoGP as India Faces Payment Deadline: A Race Against Time and Logistics
LATEST UPDATE: Kazakhstan poised to take over Indian MotoGP's spot?
Is Kazakhstan prepared to serve as a substitute for the Indian MotoGP?
Latest Information: Insiders connected to the Indian MotoGP affirm that this year's race will proceed as scheduled, with all outstanding dues to be settled after the lifting of the 'Model Code of Conduct' related to the expenditure of government funds, which is currently in effect due to the nation's General Election, on June 4.
It has been reported that Dorna has obtained written assurance from the State Government regarding the fulfillment of payments by the specified date.
The first-ever MotoGP in Kazakhstan, scheduled for the middle of June, was delayed to later in 2024 following a "national emergency" triggered by floods. This raises the immediate query of how the race will fit into an already tight schedule.
Initially, the open weekend preceding the overseas races – positioned between the Misano event on September 8th and the race in India on the 22nd – seems logically placed from a geographical perspective. However, it would lead to an unfeasible schedule of six races over six consecutive weekends.
The extra weekend during the return from the overseas races – sandwiched between the Malaysian and Valencia Grand Prixs – would also result in a sequence of 5 races over 5 consecutive weeks, along with a test session after the Valencia race. Additionally, Kazakhstan experiences chilly temperatures in November.
Given that the summer break is off-limits, the only option would be a date in August, possibly the weekend sandwiched between the Silverstone race on the 4th and the Austrian Grand Prix on the 18th.
Razlan Razali, previously at the helm of Sepang and overseeing SRT/RNF in MotoGP, has made a visit to the Sokol International Circuit. He revealed through a social media post that the circuit is fully constructed and primed to host its inaugural MotoGP event.
When asked about the absence of clear rescheduled dates for this season, Razali responded with assurance, saying, "It's merely delayed. Keep an eye on this area."
When is Sokol expected to occur?
According to Motorsport.com, Kazakhstan is being considered as an alternative host for India, which is scheduled to hold its second MotoGP event from September 20-22.
Concerns are growing in India because local organizers have reportedly failed to fulfill the financial obligations outlined in their agreements.
Motorsport indicates that India has been given until May 20 to settle its payments. If it fails to do so, the event will be called off, paving the path for Kazakhstan to step in as its replacement.
In response to inquiries regarding the speculated 'swap' between India and Kazakhstan, a representative from Dorna informed Crash.net that the situation regarding the two races remains to be seen.
The initial schedule for the 2024 calendar featured 22 races, but with Argentina being dropped, it has been downscaled to 21 events.
