Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP event.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, while Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, Martin mirrored his performance with another set of second-place finishes. Martin has consistently secured second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a bad start, Bagnaia worked his way up through the pack and closed in on Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, but he was evidently hesitant to fully commit to one side or the other.
"It's tough," Martin mentioned. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"It's definitely hard to see since there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean any further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
“I hope they’re not hurt since they appeared to be near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the upcoming race.”
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider did mention experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The San Marino Grand Prix, part of the MotoGP World Championship, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in this event in 2023 while nursing a leg injury from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will once again have a week to recover after the Aragon race in order to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This season, the Spanish rider holds a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads into his competitor's home event.
