Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Race Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances in the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, mirroring Martin's performance, who secured two second-place finishes yet again. Martin has consistently taken second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and reached Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia saw an opportunity and attempted to capitalize, but the two collided and crashed by turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he appeared hesitant to strongly support any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin mentioned. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez].
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they're alright. It looked like they were near the bikes after the accident, so I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming event in the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in this race in 2023 with a leg injury following a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, and this year he faces a similar one-week recovery time after Aragon to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard arrives at his opponent’s home circuit with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
