Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Aragon Crash Amid Championship Shake-up
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved after the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap was due to Bagnaia's victories in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, and Martin also had a similar experience with two second-place finishes. Martin has consistently placed second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. After initially struggling, Bagnaia began making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference that followed the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly support one side over the other.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see, mainly due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to the situation with Joe Roberts in Moto2, who crashed on the final lap while competing against his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I hope they're alright since they appeared to be near the bikes after the collision. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center. Scans indicated that he had not broken any bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in this race in 2023 with a leg injury sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor’s home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
