Jorge Martin Weighs In on Controversial Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon MotoGP: Championship Implications Loom Large
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia's crash set him back.
Martin reached Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin consistently secured second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez with just seven laps remaining.
During lap 18, Marquez drifted off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the situation, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, but he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor one side.
Martin commented that it was challenging and suggested inquiring with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez.
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe this prevented Alex from leaning further, similar to what happened with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the last lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, which ultimately led to a collision."
"Fingers crossed they are alright, as it looked like they were near the bikes following the crash. I really hope they can participate in the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned he was experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race while nursing a leg injury from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard heads to his rival's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
