Jorge Martin Weighs in on Controversial Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of San Marino GP
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin strengthened his chances for the championship at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, maintaining his impressive performance as Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
However, while Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, Martin secured two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races where he has ended up in the runner-up spot since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a rough start, Bagnaia was making his way up the field and reached Marquez's rear tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off track at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, leading to a collision between the two riders, causing both to crash at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, despite his obvious hesitation to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's not easy," Martin remarked. "You should inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it’s hard to notice since there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t tilt further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the last lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, leading to a collision."
"I really hope they’re alright. After the accident, it looked like they were near the motorcycles, so I’m wishing they’re good to go for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, and scans revealed that he had no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned that he was experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming event in the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury he sustained during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recuperate after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous MotoGP victories at Misano, Martin emerged victorious in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
