Jorge Martin Weighs in on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies Post-Aragon
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend due to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had an unproductive weekend in terms of points, mirroring Martin's weekend, who once again secured two second-place finishes. Martin has consistently placed second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend came to a dramatic conclusion due to a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez with just seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Seizing the opportunity, Bagnaia attempted to pass, but the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was visibly hesitant to strongly favor one side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to ask Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Undoubtedly, it was hard to see clearly due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, when Roberts fell on the final lap during a fight with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision.”
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans indicated no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next stage of the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia competed in this race with a leg injury from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from Aragon before racing at Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories in Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish racer brings a 23-point lead in the championship standings to his competitor's home circuit.
