Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship received a significant boost at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second, securing that spot in both races over the weekend. Martin has now placed second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia’s weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a shaky start, Bagnaia managed to navigate through the pack and reached the back of Marquez’s bike with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he seemed hesitant to strongly favor one side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Certainly, it’s challenging to see clearly due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, ultimately resulting in contact.
"I hope they're alright because it looked like they ended up near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming San Marino Grand Prix, part of the MotoGP World Championship, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in the race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spaniard arrives at his competitor’s home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
