Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin entered Aragon trailing Bagnaia by five points in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
While Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, Martin continued his consistent performance by securing second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a subpar start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's tough," Martin remarked. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, visibility was challenging due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe that’s why Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to Joe Roberts' situation in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this resulted in a collision."
“I really hope they’re not hurt because it looked like they were near their bikes after the crash. I’m wishing they’re alright for the upcoming race.”
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center. Scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury he sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous MotoGP victories at Misano, it was Martin who triumphed in both races there in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider arrives at his competitor's home track with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
