Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision Amid Championship Shake-Up at Aragon MotoGP
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, especially as Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin entered Aragon trailing Bagnaia by five points in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races since the summer break where he has finished in second position.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia made his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Seizing the opportunity, Bagnaia attempted to capitalize, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference held after the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to firmly support any particular side.
"It's tough," Martin remarked. "You should speak to Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Certainly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and eventually, they made contact.
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I really wish they're fit for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will also have just a one-week recovery period following the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who secured victory in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider holds a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads into his rival’s home event.
