Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Race Shifts Dramatically
Jorge Martin has shared his perspective on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia failed to finish due to a crash.
Martin came to Aragon lagging behind Bagnaia by five points in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of securing second place in both races over the weekend. Martin has now finished second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez with just seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off track at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly support one side over the other.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Definitely, it’s hard to observe clearly since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, resulting in a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. After the accident, they appeared to be near the bikes, so I wish them well for the next race."
Following the accident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia competed with a leg injury sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before participating in the Misano event.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, Martin emerged victorious in both 2023 races. As a result, the Spanish rider now holds a 23-point lead in the championship standings as he heads to his rival's home track this year.
