Jorge Martin Weighs in on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Clash as Championship Lead Widens
Jorge Martin shares his thoughts on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP race, involving his championship competitor.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship saw a significant uptick following his consistent performance at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, especially as Francesco Bagnaia exited the race due to a crash.
Martin came to Aragon five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
A disappointing weekend for Bagnaia in terms of points was paralleled by Martin securing two more runner-up positions, maintaining his streak of finishing in second place in every race since the summer break, totaling six.
Bagnaia's race weekend concluded with a mishap involving Alex Marquez towards the end of the race. Following an initially weak performance, Bagnaia was making his way up the field and reached Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn, and when Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both went down at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he appeared hesitant to strongly favor one side over the other.
"Martin admitted, "It's challenging. You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
Certainly, visibility was challenging due to the significant amount of dust in that area. This likely limited Alex's ability to lean further, similar to the situation Joe Roberts faced in Moto2, where he crashed on the final lap during a duel with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, ultimately leading to a collision.
"Hopefully, they're alright since they appeared to be near the bikes following the collision, so I'm hopeful they're in good shape for the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical facility, where imaging tests revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the MotoGP World Championship continues with the San Marino Grand Prix taking place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia is coming into this race nursing a leg injury sustained from a fall at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similar to last year, he will again have a week to recuperate post-Aragon before gearing up for the action in Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's previous two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who emerged victorious in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his adversary's home round with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
