Jorge Martin surprises many by outracing his competitor Francesco Bagnaia to clinch the win at the 2024 San Marino MotoGP Sprint race, held in Bagnaia's native Italy.
Martin rocketed from fourth position to take the lead ahead of pole position holder Bagnaia at the first chicane, closely followed by Franco Morbidelli, Brad Binder, and front-row starter Marco Bezzecchi.
As Martin, Bagnaia, and Morbidelli surged ahead, Binder found himself struggling in a futile struggle against Enea Bastianini and his KTM teammate, Pedro Acosta.
In the final laps, Martin accelerated past Bagnaia, securing his initial Sprint victory since Germany and extending his championship advantage to 26 points.
This implies that regardless of the outcome in Sunday's race, Martin will maintain his lead in the rankings.
A dissatisfied Bagnaia, who afterwards described his beginning as a 'disaster', finished the race barely ahead of Morbidelli by a slim margin.
In a fierce competition for the third spot on the podium, Morbidelli was locked in a battle with Bastianini as they entered the final lap. Bastianini managed to overtake on the inside at Turn 8, but he couldn't hold the line, allowing Morbidelli to secure his first MotoGP podium finish since 2021 in celebration.
Beginning the race in ninth position due to a crash during qualifying, Marc Marquez completed the first lap without any change in ranking, eventually climbing to fifth place by overtaking Binder and Acosta towards the end of the race.
Both riders from the VR46 team, Bezzecchi and Fabio di Giannantonio, suffered crashes within the first four laps of the race.
Every participant selected the medium compound for the front tire and opted for a soft compound for the rear. For Sunday's complete race, the medium rear is anticipated.
Pol Espargaro is participating in his third race weekend of the year for KTM, while HRC test rider Stefan Bradl is also competing as a wild-card entry this weekend.
Misano is set to be the venue for back-to-back MotoGP races this year, kicking off with the San Marino Grand Prix happening this weekend.
A formal MotoGP trial is then scheduled for Monday, followed by a comeback to the Italian track for the 'Emilia Romagna' event, substituting the India/Kazakhstan race, from September 20-22.
Updated regulations for tire pressure in 2024 stipulate that racers are required to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tires, a decrease from the previous 1.88 bar, for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race length, up from the former requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint
If a driver does not achieve the required minimum in a Grand Prix, they will face a penalty of 16 seconds added to their post-race time, or an 8-second penalty will be applied for a Sprint or shorter race.
