Jorge Martin shocks everyone by defeating his title contender Francesco Bagnaia to win the 2024 San Marino MotoGP Sprint race, held on Italian soil.
Martin surged from fourth place to take the lead ahead of pole qualifier Bagnaia at the opening chicane, while Franco Morbidelli, Brad Binder, and front-row qualifier Marco Bezzecchi followed closely behind.
As Martin, Bagnaia, and Morbidelli surged ahead, Binder found himself struggling in a futile effort against Enea Bastianini and Pedro Acosta, who was also riding a KTM.
Martin accelerated in the final laps, outpacing Bagnaia to secure his first Sprint victory since Germany, thereby extending his championship lead to 26 points.
This indicates that regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s race, Martin will remain the leader in the standings.
A displeased Bagnaia, who later described his start as a 'disaster,' finished the race just a few tenths of a second ahead of Morbidelli.
As the final lap started, Morbidelli was locked in a fierce battle with Bastianini for the last spot on the podium. Bastianini made a move at Turn 8, but went too wide, allowing Morbidelli to secure his first MotoGP top-three finish since 2021.
After experiencing a crash during the qualifying round, Marc Marquez began the race in ninth place. He maintained this position through the first lap and eventually worked his way up to finish in fifth place. In the final moments of the race, he successfully overtook Binder
Both VR46 teammates, Bezzecchi and Fabio di Giannantonio, experienced crashes and were out of the race within the first four laps.
Every rider opted for a medium compound front tire and a soft rear tire. The medium rear tire is anticipated to be used in Sunday’s full-length race.
Pol Espargaro is participating in his third race weekend of the season for KTM, while HRC test rider Stefan Bradl is also taking part as a wild-card entrant this weekend.
This season, Misano will be the venue for two back-to-back MotoGP races, beginning with the San Marino Grand Prix this weekend.
A MotoGP test session is scheduled for Monday, followed by the 'Emilia Romagna' round at the Italian circuit, replacing the India/Kazakhstan event, from September 20-22.
New tire pressure regulations for 2024 require riders to maintain a minimum front tire pressure of 1.8 bar (down from 1.88) for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race, compared to the previous requirement of 50%. For Sprint races, the minimum pressure must be maintained for 30% of the race distance.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix is a 16-second time penalty added after the race, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or short race.
