Jorge Martin Reflects on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies Ahead of San Marino GP
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable performance, while Francesco Bagnaia failed to finish due to a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
A tough weekend in terms of points for Bagnaia coincided with another set of second-place finishes for Martin, who has consistently secured second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Following a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia was making his way up the field and reached Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off the track at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the situation, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident but was noticeably hesitant to take a definitive stance.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You might want to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Absolutely, it’s hard to view clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed during the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Eventually, this led to contact.”
"I really hope they are alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I’m wishing they’ll be good to go for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the San Marino Grand Prix will take place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, as part of the next round of the MotoGP World Championship. In 2023, Bagnaia competed in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he has just one week to recover from the Aragon event to prepare for Misano.
Even though Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, Martin clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider holds a 23-point lead in the championship as they head to his competitor’s home event.
