Jorge Martin Reflects on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of San Marino
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved after last weekend's Aragon Grand Prix, where he maintained his impressive performance, and Francesco Bagnaia had an accident and did not finish the race.
Martin reached Aragon trailing Bagnaia by five points in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Despite a disappointing weekend in terms of points for Bagnaia, Martin also had a similar experience, securing second place in both races over the weekend. Notably, Martin has consistently finished second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Following a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and closed in on Marquez's rear wheel with just seven laps remaining.
During lap 18, Marquez went off the track at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to favor one side too strongly.
"It's not easy," Martin stated. "You should talk to Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Absolutely, it's hard to notice since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. So, I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts had an accident on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and eventually, they made contact."
"I really hope they're alright since they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them the best for the upcoming race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider did mention experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have a one-week recovery period following the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories in the MotoGP category at Misano, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider carries a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads to his competitor's home circuit.
