Jorge Martin Highlights Key Contenders Ahead of 2024 San Marino GP, Downplays 2023 Misano Dominance
Jorge Martin highlights the main rivals at Misano, even though he dominated the event last year. According to Martin, his past performance "doesn't matter now."
Jorge Martin, who currently leads the MotoGP championship, mentioned that his strong performance at the 2023 Misano round is "irrelevant now" as he looks forward to this year's San Marino Grand Prix.
Last season at Misano, Martin achieved a commanding victory in both the sprint and the grand prix for Ducati, significantly boosting his championship prospects.
After securing a 23-point advantage over Francesco Bagnaia in the standings last weekend in Aragon, his performance at Misano in 2023 positions him as a strong contender for winning the 2024 San Marino Grand Prix.
However, Martin thinks that his performance at Misano last year is irrelevant to the ongoing championship fight.
"It's definitely great to be back in Misano following last season's outcome," he mentioned on Thursday at the Italian location.
"However, my performance from last season is irrelevant at this point."
“The key now is to continue improving and learning, especially since the competition level has significantly increased in recent races.”
"I think I'm improving and getting stronger, but others are too."
"It's really challenging. I think that for Pecco and Enea, it will be an excellent weekend here in Italy. They practice a lot on this track, so it should be favorable for them."
"It will be challenging to dominate, even for us. I'll strive to replicate my performance from last season. It will be extremely tough, but I am committed to doing my best."
Martin emphasized that a significant factor in his commanding performance at Misano last year was the injuries sustained by his main title competitors, Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi.
Bastianini does not dismiss the possibility of competing for the 2024 title.
Enea Bastianini has consistently secured a podium finish in every Misano race he has participated in since joining MotoGP.
Even though the factory Ducati rider was absent from last year's San Marino Grand Prix due to an injury, he is anticipated to be a contender in the fight for the win.
Following a challenging weekend in Aragon, Bastianini finds himself trailing Martin by 71 points in the championship standings. However, he remains confident that greater consistency will keep him in contention for the title.
He stated, "Throughout the entire season, right from the beginning, I believe both Pecco and Jorge have consistently performed well."
"Occasionally, I achieve excellent results, but other times I do not."
"The outcome of the rest of the championship hinges on whether I can maintain greater consistency."
"However, we need to make up significant ground since we are currently 71 points behind, but nothing is impossible. There are still many races left, so let's wait and see."
