Jorge Martin Comments on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable performance, while Francesco Bagnaia had an unfortunate crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes. Martin has now come in second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a rough beginning, Bagnaia made his way up the field and closed in on Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off the racing line at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though it was evident that he was hesitant to strongly favor one side.
"It's tough," Martin stated. "You should question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it's hard to view clearly since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened with Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and ultimately, there was a collision."
“I hope they’re all right because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race.”
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center. Scans revealed that he did not have any broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in this race in 2023 with a leg injury he sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will also have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
