Jorge Martin Comments on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Clash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin shares his perspective on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP event.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship saw a significant improvement during the Aragon Grand Prix held last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a setback due to a crash.
Martin reached Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's triumph in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Despite a disappointing weekend for Bagnaia in terms of points, Martin experienced yet another weekend of consistency, securing second place in both races. This marks his sixth consecutive runner-up finish in the races that have taken place since the summer break.
Bagnaia's race concluded with a final moments collision involving Alex Marquez. Following a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia was making his way up the pack and caught up to Marquez’s back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn, and when Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both went down at the 13th turn.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he seemed hesitant to strongly favor one side over the other.
"Martin expressed that it was challenging, suggesting to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez] for more insight."
"Without a doubt, visibility was compromised, partly due to the significant amount of dust in that area. This likely made it challenging for Alex to maneuver further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing against his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this led to a collision."
"Let's hope for their well-being, considering they were near the bikes following the collision. It's my wish that they're in good condition for the upcoming race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical facility where imaging tests revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider did mention experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli is set to host the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix, a pivotal event in the MotoGP World Championship series. Bagnaia is approaching the 2023 race with a leg injury sustained during a fall at the Catalan Grand Prix. Just like last year, he will have a brief one-week recuperation window following the Aragon race to prepare for the challenges in Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two victories at Misano in the MotoGP division, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023, and the Spanish rider now carries a 23-point lead in the championship over his opponent as they head into the latter's home race.
