SNP leadership contender John Swinney has cautioned other potential candidates about joining the race, stating it would "postpone the [party's] recovery process."

The ex-deputy leader stands as the sole contender to take over from Humza Yousaf, who revealed his resignation as first minister last week following his choice to terminate a coalition with the Scottish Green Party, a move which resulted in the downfall of his leadership.

Today, there are whispers that SNP activist Graeme McCormick has secured sufficient">king to initiate his own campaign for the leadership position. Should he file his candidacy by the Monday noon deadline, the party will set in motion a three-week contest for its leadership.

He also seemed to caution any competitors, stating, "I have garnered extensive">king for my leadership campaign within the SNP. My platform focuses on uniting the SNP to fortify our party and secure Scottish independence."

"I believe it's essential because currently, the SNP lacks the unity required, and my campaign has garnered substantial support from a broad base."
