John Swinney has been confirmed as Scotland's next first minister, securing support from the majority of MSPs.

After winning the SNP leadership contest on Monday, the 60-year-old underwent a vote at Holyrood to officially replace Humza Yousaf.

The Scottish Greens chose not to participate in the voting process, allowing Mr. Swinney to successfully withstand opposition from leaders of other Scottish parties including Douglas Ross of the Scottish Conservatives, Anas Sarwar of Scottish Labour, and Alex Cole-Hamilton of the Scottish Liberal Democrats.

His name will be presented to the King, with the formal oath-taking ceremony anticipated to occur at the Court of Session in Edinburgh possibly by Wednesday.

Mr. Swinney will then have the authority to select his cabinet members.

After the election, Mr. Swinney stated, "I am deeply honored and privileged to take on the role of First Minister, and I pledge to dedicate myself to serving Scotland to the best of my abilities."

"I am determined to introduce policies in this parliament aimed at eliminating child poverty, and I am eager to collaborate with others to accomplish this goal."

"I understand that this is the necessary approach. As the head of a minority government, I must collaborate with others to achieve results.

"To effectively support our educational institutions and medical facilities, to enhance the competitiveness of our businesses, to address climate change, to eliminate child poverty, and to improve the quality of life for everyone, it is essential that we collaborate and unite our efforts."

"I pledge that my administration will strive to forge this consensus within the assembly. It is my hope that there is both room and readiness for this to occur, in service to the citizens who elected us."

Addressing the citizens of Scotland, I want to make it clear – I am presenting myself as a candidate for First Minister for all of Scotland. My commitment is to serve each one of you. I am dedicated to investing all of my efforts into shaping a brighter future for our nation.

During his acceptance speech, Mr. Swinney discussed his wife's battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the profound effects it has had on their family life.

He expressed everlasting thanks to his wife Elizabeth for her willingness to make sacrifices that allow him to fulfill his duties as the first minister.

He informed the assembly, "Colleagues are aware that my wife Elizabeth suffers from multiple sclerosis.

She tirelessly strives to prevent MS from hindering her ability to fully enjoy life. However, despite her efforts, she frequently finds herself dependent on her husband for help and support, which is a source of great annoyance to her.

"I couldn't simply agree to take on the role of first minister without first discussing with my family how we would handle it all together."

Last week, Mr. Yousaf resigned following two no-confidence votes, prompted by his decision to end the power-sharing Bute House Agreement with the Scottish Greens.

In his farewell address as first minister, Mr. Yousaf expressed that his heart would "always be with Scotland," describing his tenure as leader as a chance to overcome "racist hate."

He stated: "The young Humza Yousaf would have never envisioned himself at the helm of this nation.

"I first heard the words 'go home' at the age of six, and sadly, it's become a common experience for me since then – nearly every day, especially on my social media feeds."

He expressed that racial insults were particularly painful for him as he has only ever considered this place his home and always will.

Mr. Yousaf added, "Scotland will always have my heart."

"Thus, being given the chance to stand against the extreme right-wing, to confront the prejudiced racists who demanded I leave, to be able to work in service of my homeland, to participate in its civic affairs, and to potentially lead my homeland – this has been an incredible privilege, one I never imagined would be available to someone who looks like me."

Mr. Swinney faced no challengers in his bid for the leadership of the SNP and vowed to usher in a "new chapter" for the party. He committed to advocating for Scottish independence with "respect and courtesy."

Following his victory speech on Monday, Mr. Swinney addressed inquiries, stating that he will not renew the Bute House Agreement with the Scottish Greens. Instead, he plans to evaluate matters individually.

Prior to the election of a new first minister, the Scottish Greens declared that their MSPs would abstain from voting.

Party co-leader Lorna Slater stated that even though the SNP holds the majority in Holyrood and can rightfully establish a government, "this does not guarantee them our votes automatically."

She also stated, "It's crucial to understand the first minister's vision for Scotland and the path he intends to pursue."

Ms. Slater stated that her party aims to engage in a positive and constructive manner, avoiding unnecessary opposition or political maneuvering for mere strategic advantages.

She noted, "Our approach will be to collaborate and assist the Scottish government on a case-by-case basis."

"We will support their efforts when they implement forward-thinking policies that safeguard our environment and address child poverty. However, when necessary, we will challenge them or encourage them to set higher goals and expand their initiatives."

Mr. Ross applauded Mr. Swinney on his victory, encouraging him to "quickly alter direction" and implement an "innovative and robust policy plan for the current SNP administration, rather than merely maintaining the status quo as his predecessors did."

The leader of the Scottish Conservatives described the new beginning as a "reset moment" and urged that the push for independence be relegated to a secondary priority.

Mr. Ross stated: "Scotland is eager to find out if he will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor as a nationalist leader, or if, as we hope here, he will become the national leader that Scotland requires to progress our nation."
