John Swinney: Emerging as the Leading Contender to Succeed SNP Leader and First Minister Humza Yousaf?

The search is underway for a new leader of the SNP and the next first minister of Scotland.

On Monday, Humza Yousaf revealed his resignation after just over a year in the position.

He plans to stay in both positions until they find someone to replace him.

Ex-deputy first minister John Swinney has declared his intention to join the contest.

Former finance secretary Kate Forbes was expected to join him; however, she has recently declared her decision not to run and will endorse Mr. Swinney instead.

Who is John Swinney?

Originally from Edinburgh, Mr. Swinney has occupied a position on the backbenches for a year since resigning as Deputy First Minister following Nicola Sturgeon's resignation in 2023.

At just 15 years old, the individual became a member of the SNP in 1979. They quickly made a name for themselves within the party's youth division, eventually ascending to the position of national secretary by the age of 22.

Mr. Swinney has held his position as an MSP since the founding of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, representing North Tayside. He also served as the MP for the same area at Westminster starting in 1997.

Supporters claim that the MSP for Perthshire North, formerly the finance secretary during Alex Salmond's administration, possesses the necessary experience to guide the nation after Mr. Yousaf's resignation.

He succeeded Mr. Salmond as the head of the SNP in 2000 and stepped down in 2004 due to disappointing outcomes in the European Parliament elections.

During Ms. Sturgeon's leadership, he held multiple cabinet positions such as education secretary, COVID-19 recovery secretary, and finance secretary, temporarily replacing Kate Forbes during her maternity leave.

Throughout his tenure as Ms. Sturgeon's second-in-command, he solidified his standing as a tenacious advocate for his leader and a devoted supporter of the SNP.

He narrowly survived two no-confidence motions in Holyrood, initially due to his management of school assessments amid the pandemic, and subsequently for his initial reluctance to release legal counsel during the investigation into the mishandled harassment allegations against Mr. Salmond.

He announced that he would not be entering the 2023 leadership contest to succeed Ms. Sturgeon, explaining that he needed to prioritize his young family.

Shortly after Mr. Yousaf stepped down, numerous prominent members of the SNP rallied behind Mr. Swinney. Notable endorsements came from the party's leader in Westminster, Stephen Flynn, Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth, and MPs Pete Wishart, Ian Blackford, and Alyn Smith.

Mr. Swinney declared his candidacy for the SNP leadership, acknowledging that his party lacks the unity required to successfully secure Scottish independence.

He stated: "I am confident that my experience and abilities have earned me the trust and confidence of people nationwide, positioning me to reunify the SNP and concentrate on our strengths—unifying Scotland, serving its citizens, and striving to forge an optimal future for our nation."

If he wins the election, Mr. Swinney expressed his desire for Ms. Forbes to have a "significant role" in his administration.

He stated: "She possesses intelligence, creativity, and thoughtfulness, qualities that are highly valuable to our country's progress. Should I win the election, I will ensure that Kate has the opportunity to make her valuable contributions."
