Johann Zarco Finds Hope with New Honda Parts in Misano MotoGP Test: ‘A Very Different Feeling on the Bike
Johann Zarco feels optimistic about the Honda's performance after testing it at the Misano MotoGP, describing the experience as "a notably different sensation on the bike, which is a positive development."
Johann Zarco was feeling upbeat following the single-day MotoGP test in Misano, as he experimented with various new components for the Honda RC213V.
Throughout this year, Zarco has consistently delivered impressive performances for Honda. Notably, in 2024, his efforts were highlighted during events such as the one in Aragon. There, Zarco achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Honda rider this year to advance directly to Q2 from Friday's practice session.
Following the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, Zarco expressed his dissatisfaction with the 2024 project, stating, "this 2024 project does not work at all. It’s not competitive." The French rider demanded significant alterations to the RC213V to improve its performance. Despite the RC213V that appeared at the Misano test not being drastically different from the version used throughout the season and retaining the same engine specification, Zarco remained relatively optimistic at the conclusion of the one-day test.
He mentioned to MotoGP.com that they have gained a better understanding of various aspects. They tested three different setups and received valuable feedback. Although the bike felt significantly different in a positive way, this hasn't yet translated to better performance or lap times, as the competition remains extremely fast and their lap times haven't improved.
"The sensation we experienced this time is crucial, particularly since our previous approach wasn't effective and didn't contribute to increased speed. This time, with the adjustments we've made, I'm hopeful we can make further progress." Honda introduced new aerodynamic features and a new chassis design during the test.
Zarco mentioned that they were experimenting with the aerodynamics. He noted that these changes were quite evident. They also made adjustments to the chassis to improve the acceleration experience, and he feels they have achieved that. The next step is to figure out how to utilize these improvements to enhance performance.
When questioned about whether Honda has a clear path for further development of the RC213V, Zarco responded, "I believe so. We'll see how things unfold at Misano 2. I anticipate it will remain quite challenging. […] However, I'm hopeful that we might achieve some good results in the Asian races."
