Jake Dixon’s Remarkable Climb from 14th to 5th Fuels Late Moto2 Title Aspirations
“Moving from 14th to 5th feels like a victory”: Jake Dixon bolsters his Moto2 championship push
“If we had started in the first two rows, I truly believe we could have competed for a podium finish…"
Jake Dixon expressed his delight after advancing from 14th place to finish fifth in Round 13 of the 2024 Moto2 World Championship held in Misano. This performance keeps him on track for a potential late challenge for the riders' title this year.
The British rider, who did not earn any points in the first five races due to an injury at the Moto2 season opener in Qatar, has recently climbed up the rankings thanks to a series of impressive performances.
After securing his second victory of the season in Aragon only a week prior, Dixon faced a challenge in the San Marino Moto2 race at Misano. Despite his recent success, he had to start from the fifth row, having qualified in 14th place on the CFMoto Aspar Team Kalex.
In the latter part of the race, the racer from Kent made a significant push, maneuvering his way up to finish in fifth place. Despite starting further back, Dixon was pleased with his performance, especially since only Ai Ogura, among the top five overall, managed to earn more points than him.
He expressed to TNT Sports that he considers it a victory given their starting point.
"This weekend was challenging. I managed to position the bike where it was necessary, even though it resisted in certain areas. At the start, I focused on maintaining my position, knowing that I would perform better towards the end."
"If we had started from the first two rows, I believe we could have contended for a podium finish, but that didn’t happen. Considering our starting position, I managed to secure the highest points possible, and I am extremely pleased with that."
Despite losing two points to the new leader Ogura in the overall standings, Dixon is still in contention for the championship with seven events left.
Consequently, although there is a 45-point difference to Ogura, he is now only three points behind Alonso Lopez and Joe Roberts, who are tied for third place overall.
Dixon will have another opportunity to excel at Misano as the Moto2 series continues with a second event at the same location later this month, following the cancellation of the scheduled MotoGP races in Kazakhstan and India.
“We hope to be stronger next week, as we can't repeat the performance we had this weekend.”
