Jake Dixon’s Remarkable Charge: From 14th to 5th in Misano Bolsters Moto2 Title Hopes
"Moving from 14th to 5th place feels like a victory": Jake Dixon bolsters his late push for the Moto2 championship.
"If we had started in the first two rows, I believe we could have competed for a podium finish…"
Jake Dixon expressed his delight after advancing from 14th place to finish fifth in Round 13 of the 2024 Moto2 World Championship held in Misano. With this performance, he continues to strengthen his pursuit of this year's riders' title.
The British racer, who didn't earn any points in the first five rounds due to an injury suffered at the Qatar Moto2 season opener, has been climbing up the overall rankings recently thanks to a series of impressive performances.
After securing his second victory of the season in Aragon a week earlier, Dixon faced a challenging task in the San Marino Moto2 race at Misano. Riding for the CFMoto Aspar Team on a Kalex bike, he began the race from the 14th position on the fifth row following the qualifiers.
Nevertheless, the racer from Kent showed impressive performance in the latter half of the competition, advancing to secure fifth place by the finish line. Dixon found contentment in the outcome, given his initial placement, as Ai Ogura was the sole competitor among the top five to surpass him in points.
He expressed to TNT Sports that he considers it a victory given their starting point.
"This weekend was tough, but I managed to position the bike correctly. There were spots it didn't handle well, but I focused on hanging on at the start, knowing I'd perform better towards the finish."
"If we had started in the first two rows, I believe we could have competed for a podium finish, but it didn't happen. Given our position, I earned the most points possible and I am extremely pleased."
Despite losing two points and surrendering the lead in the standings to Ogura, the new points leader, Dixon is still in contention for the title with seven events left.
Therefore, although there is a 45-point difference to catch up to Ogura, he is currently only three points behind Alonso Lopez and Joe Roberts, who are tied for third place overall.
Dixon will have another opportunity to excel at Misano when the Moto2 series continues with a second event there later this month, due to the cancellation of the scheduled MotoGP races in Kazakhstan and India.
"With any luck, we'll be more robust next week; we can't repeat the mistakes we made this weekend."
