Jack Miller’s Daring Move to Secure Q2 at Misano: Apologies to Zarco and Aims to Catch Bagnaia
Jack Miller: "It was a daring move to catch up with Pecco!" | "I said sorry to Zarco"
Jack Miller: "I took a huge risk! I had to say sorry to Johann since I aggressively overtook him at turn 14 to stay close to Pecco."
Frequently missing out on a spot among the top ten for entry into Qualifying 2 during MotoGP weekends, Jack Miller narrowly secured his position at Misano, thanks to a draft from Francesco Bagnaia.
The Australian managed to secure the vital tenth position, edging out his Red Bull KTM teammate Brad Binder by a mere 0.1 seconds.
"Content with how the day went, I barely made it, but that's just how it is at times," Miller remarked.
"Lately, I've found myself more often on the fringes, so it's refreshing to finally be past that tipping point. Apologies to my buddy here [Binder], though; he'll bounce back without any issues tomorrow."
When asked about following closely behind the current champion and leader of the practice, Bagnaia, Miller responded with a smile:
I put myself in great danger to accomplish it! On my way in, I said sorry to Johann because I aggressively overtook him at 14 during his warm-up lap [as seen in the photo], since I was keen on following closely behind and trying to keep up with Pecco.
"It was nice; I managed to keep [Bagnaia] in sight for the first sector, which was pleasant! But then, he just disappeared! Clearly, we still have some work to do."
Miller pointed out that his ex-teammate from Ducati had an advantage in the section from Turn 1 to Turn 2 due to his ability to maintain speed over the minor undulating bumps. He highlighted that his teammate wasn't focusing on accelerating between these turns, resulting in reduced pitching of the motorcycle.
As usual in this area, particularly in the third sector along the rear straight, his performance is incredibly strong! Looking at the numbers, it's quite revealing. When comparing his speed through Turn 11 with others, the difference in velocity he maintains is significantly noticeable.
"There are a few aspects we can refine, but as I mentioned earlier, I'm really pleased to have advanced to Qualifying 2. Clearly, it's a significant relief for tomorrow morning, and it allows us to concentrate on improving our speed during FP3."
Miller disclosed that he has no additional modified swingarms in reserve, as both were compromised at Aragon.
"He grinned, explaining that none were left because he had damaged one and Zarco was responsible for breaking the other during an incident with the French rider in the Aragon Sprint."
"It allowed us a bit more flexibility to maneuver the bike."
Several other bike makers, including Ducati, are currently employing significantly lengthier motorcycles. This is particularly notable given the current performance of the tires.
"I believe we should aim for greater length and height, though we must pause until the next version is returned to us."
Binder mentioned that he hasn't reached the full potential of his existing swingarm yet.
On Friday, newcomer Pedro Acosta led the KTM team, securing the sixth position.
