Jack Doohan Poised for Alpine F1 Debut in 2025: Damon Hill Confident in Young Driver’s Preparation
Possible replacement for Esteban Ocon at Alpine “extremely prepared” for Formula 1 debut
Damon Hill evaluates Jack Doohan – the leading candidate to join Alpine in 2025.
Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 world champion, thinks that Jack Doohan will be "extremely well-prepared" for his anticipated debut with Alpine in 2025.
According to reports, Doohan is the leading candidate to take over Esteban Ocon's position at Alpine.
For the past few years, the Australian has been an integral member of the Alpine team, significantly contributing as a simulator driver and serving as the reserve driver.
He has participated in a rigorous testing schedule with the team as he gets ready for a probable debut in Formula 1.
Alpine aimed to persuade Carlos Sainz to become part of their team, yet the Spanish driver chose to sign with Williams instead.
It is generally believed that Doohan is the leading candidate to partner with Pierre Gasly next year, taking over Ocon's position.
During an appearance on the F1 Nation podcast, Hill shared his perspective on Doohan.
"Jack is an exceptionally skilled driver," he remarked. "He performed admirably. He has demonstrated his racing capabilities. He is intelligent and curious. He always appears to be present, asking numerous questions and collaborating closely with the team."
"He will certainly be an intriguing person to test. Unlike Ollie Bearman, who has already participated in an F1 race, he has not yet demonstrated his abilities in the sport. Many of these drivers have potential."
"They're so thoroughly trained that they'll excel when they enter Formula 1."
Doohan's prospects have improved because there aren't many other feasible choices available.
Considering the drivers currently on the roster, Zhou Guanyu stands out as a potential choice, especially due to his connections with China.
Despite being paired with Valtteri Bottas, who is considered the best option after Doohan, his performance in 2024 has been dreadful.
Bruno Famin, who has recently resigned from his position as head of the Alpine team, disclosed prior to the summer hiatus that the team is "grooming" Doohan for a potential full-time driving role in 2025.
“We’re getting him ready,” he stated. “He has a demanding test schedule, and we are pleased with it.
"We need to observe his progress. He is certainly one of the options available, though there are other possibilities as well."
