The tragic incidents that unfolded in 1994 had a lasting effect on Formula 1, marking the untimely deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola.

Benetton's initial advantage

Michael Schumacher of Benetton rolled into San Marino holding a perfect score of 20 points after securing consecutive wins. In contrast, Senna experienced a rough start at Williams, failing to complete or earn any points in the first two races after his move from McLaren.

The dispute was escalating as Senna firmly believed that Benetton had an unauthorized traction control system in use, given that electronic assistance for drivers was prohibited in 1994.

Bearing a sense of grievance and facing a substantial 20-point gap behind Schumacher at the Imola track, Senna was compelled to mount a comeback…

Barrichello establishes the mood for F1's most somber weekend

Following an impressive beginning to the 1994 season, a youthful Rubens Barrichello made his way to Imola.

After securing fourth place in his home country of Brazil, Barrichello achieved his first podium finish in Japan, boosting his confidence as he held the second spot in the championship standings.

During the initial qualifying round, Barrichello encountered the kerb at the Variante Bassa turn while traveling at 225 km/h on his second attempt, propelling him into the air.

Barrichello collided forcefully with the peak of the tire barrier, losing consciousness due to a collision that registered at 95G.

Professor Sid Watkins, accompanied by his medical team, swiftly approached Barichello's damaged Jordan, finding him with a facial laceration and a fractured nose.

During the continuation of the qualifying session, Olivier Beretta lost control and reversed into the barrier at the same turn where Barrichello had his accident, emerging from his Larrousse vehicle without any injuries.

F1 remarkably avoided its first fatal incident since 1982, only to confront it again just a day later.

Disaster unfolds during qualification round

In 1991, Austrian racer Roland Ratzenberger was unable to land a spot with Jordan, but he went on to make his Formula 1 debut in 1994 driving for the Simtek team.

The Austrian secured a fifth-place finish in the 1993 Le Mans 24 Hours prior to transitioning to Formula 1, where he teamed up with David Brabham, the offspring of Jack Brabham, a three-time Formula One World Champion.

As the weekend's second qualifying round commenced at Imola, Ratzenberger hit the circuit aiming to secure a spot on Sunday's race grid.

Roughly 20 minutes into the practice, he veered off course at the Acqua Minerale chicane, resulting in damage to his front wing.

Ratzenberger didn't head back to the pit area, aiming to secure his position on the starting grid for the upcoming Sunday's Grand Prix.

As he neared the Villeneuve Corner, it seemed his front wing malfunctioned. Unable to steer around the bend, he collided with the external concrete barrier at a speed of 314 km/h.

The impact of the collision caused the front wheel to break through his Simtek cockpit, resulting in serious head trauma.

The gravity of the situation became clear when Watkins and his medical team swiftly gathered around Ratzenberger.

A few moments following his arrival at Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, Ratzenberger was declared deceased, with the official cause being identified as a fracture of the base of the skull.

Roland's passing was the first fatality since Riccardo Paletti's tragic accident at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1982.

Twelve years later, a poignant reminder that F1 remained a risky sport.

The paddock was deeply impacted by its first deadly incident in a long time, prompting the drivers to unanimously decide on restructuring the Grand Prix Drivers' Association. Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, and Gerhard Berger were appointed as its initial leaders.

A tragic day unfolded at Imola, yet the events that would occur just a day later were beyond anyone's anticipation.

"Today marks the darkest day in the history of Grand Prix racing that comes to mind."

"After Ratzenberger's tragic incident, Watai-allcreator.com">kins suggested to Senna, "Is there anything more you aim to achieve? You've already secured the world champion title three times and are undeniably the fastest behind the wheel. Why not retire and join me for some fishing?"

Senna responded, "Sid, some matters are beyond our command. Quitting isn't an option for me; I must continue."

Senna aimed to transform his leading start into a maiden victory for Williams as he continued on his path.

The San Marino Grand Prix of 1994 resumed on the fifth lap following an incident where Pedro Lamy collided with JJ Lehto's stationary Benetton.

Senna remained in front, with Schumacher closely behind, as both drivers surged ahead, leading the pack.

During the seventh lap, as he neared the left-hand Tamburello curve, Senna was unable to navigate the turn with his Williams, veering off track and colliding with the barrier at a velocity of 211 kilometers per hour.

To this day, differing hypotheses exist regarding the cause of Senna's crash at Tamburello.

Schumacher, who was directly trailing Senna, mentioned: "I noticed Senna's vehicle was scraping against the track significantly at the rear on the previous lap. It appeared quite unstable around that bend, and he almost spun out."

"Subsequently, during his following attempt, he couldn't keep control. The vehicle's rear skids merely grazed the track, causing it to skid slightly, and then he completely lost control."

Fifteen minutes after his accident, Senna was extracted from his Williams, following the decision to stop the race by waving the red flag.

The world of racing was on pause, anticipating updates, yet none arrived.

Thirty-seven minutes following Senna's crash, the competition continued, with Schumacher securing his third consecutive victory, surpassing Ferrari's Nicola Larini.

Without knowledge of Senna's state, Schumacher remarked post-race: "I can't feel content, I can't feel pleased," in light of what transpired over the Imola weekend.

More than two hours following Schumacher's victory, medical professionals confirmed Senna's passing.

"Legendary BBC commentator Murray Walker remarked, "I cannot recall a darker day in the history of Grand Prix racing than this."

A somber moment for Formula 1, yet it was a turning point that forever transformed the sport.

The enduring impact on safety from Imola 94

Claiming that the Imola 1994 incidents were the only trigger for modifications misrepresents the situation since safety measures in Formula 1 had been advancing prior to this event.

The fatalities of Senna and Ratzenberger prompted major reforms that continue to safeguard individuals in F1 and motorsport as of 2021.

The implementation of the HANS system has significantly reduced the occurrence of injuries like basilar skull fractures, which are typically caused by severe impacts.

Following Ratzenberger's tragic incident, there was a significant push towards enhancing the HANS system – an acronym for Head and Neck Support. This device has since become a crucial component of the safety gear used by drivers in grand prix races today.

The resurgence of the GPDA led to additional updates, with enhancements to circuit layouts and vehicle collision systems being prioritized as Formula 1 improved its safety protocols.

Two decades had passed without a fatality during an F1 weekend until the tragic death of Jules Bianchi in 2015, which resulted from injuries he suffered at the Suzuka race the previous year.

Once more, Formula 1 introduced the Halo cockpit safety feature, which was initially criticized for its appearance and received poorly by enthusiasts.

It effectively fulfills its role in safeguarding drivers and making sure that contemporary fans, along with those involved in motorsport, do not have to endure the hardships experienced in 1994.

The happenings of 1994 are eternally etched in the collective memory as Formula 1's most tragic weekend.
