Hong Kong Bolsters Dispute Resolution Services: Justice Secretary Paul Lam Spearheads Roadshow across Southeast Asia
Hong Kong is set to showcase its dispute resolution services capabilities at Southeast Asia roadshows. Justice Secretary Paul Lam will head another group to Brunei, Vietnam, and Malaysia to highlight the city's special benefits.
Hong Kong's Justice Secretary, Paul Lam Ting-kwok, is set to head a group of law experts on a trip to Brunei, Vietnam, and Malaysia later this month. The aim is to enhance the visibility of the city's legal and dispute-settlement services.
The purpose of the trip is to enhance the city's position as a go-between for mainland China and nations in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, amid escalating political conflict with the West. Previously, in May, Lam spearheaded a delegation of 30 to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
"My role is to improve and deepen the comprehension of our allies in the Belt and Road areas regarding the legal and conflict resolution services offered by Hong Kong," he declared at a conference discussing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) this Wednesday. He further stated that the city possesses "exclusive benefits" in safeguarding the rights of entities participating in international investment agreements.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a strategy by China to collaborate on infrastructure projects with about 150 countries worldwide. Hong Kong is unique in China as it's the only region operating under common law. Its legal structure and mechanisms for resolving disagreements, as well as its infrastructure, are well-developed, according to Lam.

He also praised Hong Kong's robust reporting on environmental, social, and governance matters, its investment management guidelines, and legal structure. He further stated that several bilateral agreements with mainland China regarding legal enforcement and dispute resolution boost the city's competitive edge.
