Helmut Marko Quashes Liberty Media Influence Rumors on Sergio Perez’s Red Bull Seat Retention
Helmut Marko dismisses speculation that Liberty Media influenced Red Bull's choice to retain Sergio Perez.
Helmut Marko has rejected claims that Liberty Media, the owners of Formula 1, stepped in to guarantee that Sergio Perez would keep his seat at Red Bull, ensuring he competes in his home Grand Prix in Mexico.
This past Monday, the leadership team at Red Bull convened after the Belgian Grand Prix to talk about what lies ahead for Perez.
Perez's underwhelming performance, amassing only 28 points across the past eight races, has exposed Red Bull to potential risk in the constructors’ championship, with McLaren posing a significant threat.
Consequently, Red Bull was contemplating a driver change, with Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson emerging as potential replacements for Perez.
Nonetheless, Christian Horner has affirmed that Perez will continue driving, aiming for a comeback at circuits where he's historically excelled, such as Azerbaijan and Singapore.
Soon after the announcement, F1-Insider reported that Liberty Media made a request to Red Bull to rethink the decision to let go of Perez.
There was worry that taking Perez off the grid could have a major economic effect on the Mexican race.
Marko rejected those hypotheses in an interview with Speedweek.
"He wrote that claims suggesting his ongoing participation is because of Liberty Media's desire for him to race in Mexico are unfounded."
"[Liberty] definitely hopes he will compete in his local race, but our decision on which driver to select isn't influenced by what Liberty desires."
Red Bull seems to be completely backing Perez, as Marko is "relying on consistency".
Red Bull holds a slim advantage in the standings, leading McLaren by just 42 points, and Max Verstappen has not secured a victory in the recent three races.
"Sergio Perez is set to continue behind the wheel for Red Bull Racing after the summer hiatus, as the upcoming circuits are ones where he performed well last year, and the team is focusing on maintaining stability," he further stated.
"Consistently delivering strong performances, he impressively secured a swift third-place finish during Saturday's final race weekend at Spa."
"Perez isn't required to increase his speed, but rather to enhance his consistency. Considering the options available, he remains our optimal choice."
