Helmut Marko Mocks McLaren’s Strategy Blunder at Italian Grand Prix: ‘Thanks for the Sportsmanship
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren with a comment on "sportsmanship" during the Italian Grand Prix, saying, "I value that, and it somewhat improves our position."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed gratitude to McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren is now trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors' championship.
The team from Woking might have topped the leaderboard after the Monza race if they had managed to achieve a 1-2 finish.
Nevertheless, opting for a two-stop strategy for Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris turned out to be an expensive choice.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the race lead and maintain it using a one-stop strategy.
Norris secured third place, narrowing Max Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship by just eight points. Verstappen now holds a 62-point advantage going into the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko rejected the notion that it was a "disappointing result" and took a jab at McLaren.
“This wasn’t a disappointing result at all,” he remarked. “We had anticipated this outcome to some extent, and I wish to offer my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and extend my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play.”
"Thank you for that; it improves our circumstances somewhat."
Red Bull had a tough weekend, with Verstappen managing to secure only a sixth-place finish.
His sixth-place finish is his poorest result on the track since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Given Red Bull's significant challenges, they face risks in both championship standings, especially with upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are anticipated to be unfavorable for them.
Red Bull has some positive news: they have a month-long break before the series of American races. This break gives them valuable time to possibly come up with solutions that could help Verstappen secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still sure that Verstappen will keep being a game-changer in 2024.
He stated that, both mentally and in terms of quality, Max remains the top driver in the field.
