Hamilton’s Apology to Verstappen Falls Flat Amid Emilia Romagna GP Practice Clash
Lewis Hamilton discusses his encounter with Max Verstappen: "I attempted to say sorry, however…"
Lewis Hamilton shares his thoughts on his altercation with Max Verstappen during the second practice session at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton has admitted to obstructing Max Verstappen in the second practice session for the Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
During the latter part of the second free practice session (FP2), Hamilton impeded Verstappen's attempt at a quick lap.
Until then, Verstappen had faced difficulties in achieving the right balance with his RB20, ultimately recording the seventh quickest time.
Hamilton attempted to avoid Verstappen during the initial series of turns, but the Red Bull driver's lap was compromised.
Verstappen visibly displayed his annoyance, signaling to Hamilton from his vehicle before sharply moving in front of his previous Formula 1 championship competitor.
The man from the Netherlands had a negative opinion about the conflict following the meeting, noting "this isn't the first occurrence".
Sharing his perspective, Verstappen expressed, "Wow. I was in the middle of a cooldown lap. I believed I had plenty of space."
"I thought I had enough distance between us. However, unexpectedly, he closed the gap quickly. In the end, I realized the error was mine. I attempted to offer an apology, but by then, his frustration had peaked."
Beyond that, it was a favorable day for Mercedes as the team rolled out several enhancements.
Hamilton is convinced their efforts are making a difference.
"He mentioned, "The weekend has kicked off well. We seem to be much closer than before, or so it appears. Let's see what tomorrow brings."
"Truly thankful to all the team members at the facility for their relentless effort in introducing these enhancements. We're witnessing advancements in the vehicle, and our on-track performance is benefiting."
In FP2, George Russell supported his teammate, ensuring both Mercedes drivers finished among the top five.
Evaluating his performance, Russell mentioned, "The car performed excellently today. Both Lewis and I experienced a positive sensation while driving, which was pleasant."
"Moderately competitive, somewhat closer than what was demonstrated in Miami."
Certainly, it will become clear to all during the qualifying rounds what our real position is.
"Currently, McLaren appears to be leading the pack, and they're likely the fastest once more. Their speed has been unmatched since the China race."
"Regardless, the team has made significant progress by incorporating these new components into the vehicle. It's a positive advancement."
