Hamilton and Magnussen Face Major Setbacks with Hefty Penalties in Miami Sprint Drama

Lewis Hamilton and Kevin Magnussen faced significant penalties during the sprint race in Miami.

Lewis Hamilton and Kevin Magnussen faced significant penalties, resulting in a points deduction for both drivers during the F1 Miami Grand Prix sprint race.

Seven-time global champion Hamilton crossed the finish line in eighth place during the Miami race, initially seeming to have clinched the last available point. However, he was later penalized with a post-race drive-through penalty.

Due to Hamilton's inability to fulfill the penalty, it was changed to a 20-second time penalty, resulting in the British driver falling to 16th place.

The race ended in significant disappointment for the Mercedes competitor, who struggled to overtake Magnussen's Haas throughout most of the 19 laps.

Magnussen fiercely protected his Haas colleague Nico Hulkenberg, aiding him in securing crucial points by finishing seventh. However, this aggressive defense resulted in Magnussen receiving three different penalties.

Initially, Magnussen was handed a 10-second penalty for">kipping the chicane to maintain his lead over Hamilton.

Magnussen received additional penalties, each lasting 10 seconds, for exiting the track and subsequently gaining an advantage on two separate occasions.

Ultimately, Magnussen incurred a five-second penalty for surpassing the boundaries of the track, elevating his total penalty duration to 35 seconds.

This resulted in the Dane dropping from 10th to 18th, making him the last among those who completed the race.

Magnussen acknowledged that he rightfully received all of his penalties, emphasizing the importance of aligning with the team's strategy.

"Magnussen confirmed to Sky that the penalties were absolutely justified, emphasizing, "I had no choice but to participate once more.

"I had secured an advantageous spot towards the back. At the race's start, I managed to move up significantly, reaching 8th place."

I managed to defend effectively against Lewis since I was benefiting from the DRS due to Nico, and my speed was quite competitive.

Subsequently, Nico took a shortcut through the chicane, resulting in me losing the DRS. Nico had the option to relinquish that advantage, enabling me to regain DRS for defense, which would have comfortably secured us the seventh and eighth positions.

Rather, I found myself at a disadvantage against Lewis. Engaging in intense battles with him, it became crucial for me to establish a distance similar to what I achieved in Jeddah.

I resorted to strategies that I wasn't fond of employing, yet ultimately, I fulfilled my role in the team. This effort enabled Nico to earn his points as I created the necessary distance to prevent Lewis and Tsunoda from overtaking him.

"Definitely not my preferred style of racing, but it was necessary for today's circumstances."
